Not a Pretty Picture

In 1976, Amer­i­can film­mak­er Martha Coolidge direct­ed her first film, which explored a major trau­ma from her ado­les­cence. By stag­ing the rape she endured at age six­teen with actors and dis­cussing this reen­act­ment with them, she shed new light on the mech­a­nisms of sex­u­al vio­lence and male dom­i­na­tion and demon­strat­ed how film can be a means of resist­ing them.
