About

Cather­ine Deneuve broke out in Jacques Demy’s The Umbrel­las of Cher­bourg, win­ner of the 1964 Palme d’Or. She reunit­ed with the film­mak­er for The Young Girls of Rochefort, Don­key Skin and A Slight­ly Preg­nant Man. The actress then went on to col­lab­o­rate with the great­est film­mak­ers of her time: Jean-Paul Rap­pe­neau (A Mat­ter of Resis­tance, The Sav­age), Roman Polan­s­ki (Repul­sion), Agnès Var­da (The Crea­tures, One Hun­dred and One Nights), Luis Buñuel (Belle de Jour, Tris­tana), Alain Cav­a­lier (Heart­beat), François Truf­faut (Mis­sis­sip­pi Mer­maid, The Last Metro), Mar­co Fer­reri (Liza, Don’t Touch the White Woman), Mau­ro Bologni­ni (The Mur­ri Affair), Jean-Pierre Melville (A Cop), Robert Aldrich (Hus­tle), Claude Lelouch (Sec­ond Chance, Us Two) and Dino Risi (The For­bid­den Room). In the ear­ly 1980s, her col­lab­o­ra­tion with André Téch­iné, with whom she made sev­en films, opened a new stage in her career. She sub­se­quent­ly worked with Tony Scott (The Hunger), Jean-Pierre Mocky (The Man Who Loved Zoos), Régis Wargnier (Indo­chine), Nicole Gar­cia (Place Vendôme) and Leos Carax (Pola X). From the 2000s onward, she began to col­lab­o­rate with a new gen­er­a­tion of French and inter­na­tion­al film­mak­ers, includ­ing Lars von Tri­er (Dancer in the Dark), François Ozon (8 Women, Potiche), Arnaud Desplechin (Kings and Queen, A Christ­mas Tale), Valérie Lemerci­er (Palais Roy­al!), Christophe Hon­oré (Beloved, Mar­cel­lo Mio), Emmanuelle Bercot (On My Way, Stand­ing Tall, Peace­ful), Pierre Sal­vadori (In the Court­yard), Mar­tin Provost (The Mid­wife), Thier­ry Kli­fa (All That Divides Us), Hirokazu Kore-eda (The Truth), Eric Khoo (Spir­it World), Asghar Farha­di (Par­al­lel Tales) and Léa Dom­e­n­ach (The President’s Wife and the upcom­ing Man’s Skin). Her career is reg­u­lar­ly cel­e­brat­ed at the world’s major fes­ti­vals and has been dec­o­rat­ed with numer­ous cin­e­mato­graph­ic distinctions.
