Born in 1939 in Amsterdam, he entered the Royal Navy, where he learned filmmaking. His first features had great success in his homeland, and he moved to the US, where he directed many blockbusters such as Total Recall (1990) or Basic Instinct (1992). He finally went back to Europe to shot Black Book (2006), then Elle (2016). His work combines sex, violence and religion, as he considers them as “the three main elements on Earth”.
